Counselor's Corner

Katie Ostrander, LSRO Counselor
My name is Katie Ostrander and I am thrilled to be the counselor for Life School Red Oak. This is my 9th year in education. I began my career in Venus ISD as an instructional aide at the Primary School as the kindergarten aide and art teacher for three years. After receiving my teaching certification, I was hired as a 6th grade science teacher where I taught for four years. Last year, I was able to serve as the Special Education Counselor for the district. I am very excited to begin a new journey with the Life School Red Oak as the counselor!!
My job is to support students, school staff, and parents as they work together toward student academic success.  I accomplish this goal through the following categories of services:
*Response Services: I work with students, teachers, and parents in need of services which could include resource materials, consultation, or counseling services.  School counseling is brief and solution-focused in nature and centered on the academic needs of the student.  If you feel your student may benefit from school counseling, you may complete a Counseling Permission Form and return it to your child’s teacher.  I will then contact you to discuss your child’s needs.
*Guidance Lessons: This year, at Red Oak, we are using the "7 Habits of Happy Kids." Each habit is broken into five weeks sessions. Kindergarten and first grade are receiving lessons in their classroom from myself, and second grade through sixth grade are receiving lessons from their specials teachers during mustang club. More information about the  "7 Habits of Happy Kids" can be found at http://www.theleaderinme.org/the-7-habits-for-kids.
*Individual Planning: I assist with special education referral process and Section 504. I work with teachers and parents to make sure that the individual academic needs of students are being met.
*Systems Support:  I provide training for Life School staff throughout the year to help them meet their goals to educate students.
